Square Enix Is Betting Heavily on Premium Mobile Games
Square Enix is one of those companies that's been doing something surprising; it's been releasing premium mobile games, such as Hitman GO [$4.99], instead of going the F2P way like most others. According to Enix's 2016 annual report, it's planning on continuing to do just that despite the knowledge that F2P games dominate the industry. More specifically, the report points out that the market for premium games is "practically nonexistent," and yet despite this, Enix has been offering premium games for mobile devices, including brand new titles, and these games are now a considerable volume of the company's total earnings. The golden age of low-budget F2P games providing major returns is over according to Enix primarily because consumers of F2P have grown much more demanding than they were in the early years.
